About
My love for Repurposed & Recycled Art
Sunshine Coast sculptor Jodi Casey merges materials, that are not commonly considered or combined, into mesmerising creations. Through repurposing rejected lumber cuts, old costume jewellery, weathered tools and utensils, she reinvigorates their function and constructs innovative and detailed structures. Depicting an array of enchanting native wildlife and distinctive environmental imagery, her works are a summary and celebration of life in the Sunshine State.
Sourcing items from tip and op shops, garage sales, marketplaces and overseas travel destinations, Jodi’s passion for collating discarded metals and hardware dates back to her childhood. Raised by parents who were avid antique collectors, she developed an acute awareness of their intrinsic artistry and adopted the avocation. Her father’s captivation with rusty trinkets lead her to discover their boundless usages and later inspired her to assimilate the element of rust into her works.
Initially forging her materials into two-dimensional images, she was compelled to create larger, free-standing sculptures in the tail end of 2022, recognising it as her art’s next natural progression. Embracing a creative process that is largely free-flowing, each work’s concept and execution is typically dictated by the individual items themselves. Describing her works as nostalgic and whimsical, they include contrasts of hard and soft objects and offer viewers the opportunity to anatomise the blended components.
Jodi has successfully created works for numerous buyers within Australia, New Zealand and the United States. She regularly creates commissions and has been frequently asked to produce works that memorialise or symbolise a specific individual. In these instances, many clients have provided Jodi with items of deep sentimental value to skilfully incorporate, resulting in works that are deeply personalised and enduring. If you are interested in having a commission work created, you can contact Jodi directly via phone or email to discuss your desired artwork.
